Chinese? Manderin?

Dec 15th, 2004 by Ashley

They are talking about how insulted they&#039d feel if people assume them speaking Manderin(Chinese).

In my opinion, it&#039s just a matter of politics.
As I grew up, we learn the word “Chinese” as we actually mean Manderin. (at least in Taiwan)
For some of us, “Chinese” stands for Manderin. It&#039s not that we assume all the Chinese people
speaks Manderin. I don&#039t remember anyone really taught me the word “Manderin”. I learned to
use Manderin instead of Chinese through time and practices.

I guess some people may not even know the word “Maderin”. For them, “Chinese” is just the English
translation for “Pu Tung Hua”. (It&#039s not correct, but they don&#039t intend to offend others, either.)

somewhat ignorant and unthoughtful, perhaps; but not necessary arrogant.
