Hustle and Flow (2005)

You probably remembered the roaring comments (positive or negative) roused by Three 6 Mafia’s performance of It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp on the Academy Awards last year.
I knew little about the movie, wasn’t intended to watch it, but life was like that, things happen when you’re least expected.
In the first 30 minutes, I decided I wasn’t going to like the movie but I’d endure it since I couldn’t go anywhere else. Aside from the fact that it’s about an unsuccessful pimp, the movie gave me a feeling of Taiwanese suburbia day time drama, strangely. But then I realized it’s actually a movie about music, about the American dream. Half way through the movie, it became all warm and fuzzy as I started to feel for/with the characters, however unredeemable they are. And that’s when the movie went cliche-ish. Nevertheless, it was still fun and inspiring watching them produce the songs, and surprisingly, I enjoyed it quite much. (surprisingly, it turned out to be an uplifting movie. Who’d have thought!”)
