To Have and Have Not (1944)
Apr 22nd, 2007 by Ashley
It’s another WWII romance/war/adventure movie set in Vichy-French controlled Martinique. Most of the scene took place in the lounge of Hotel Maquis, with a pianist and the band, stairway to guest rooms, the French Resistance, shooting, arresting, questioning and Bogart. Don’t all of these remind you of Casablanca?
Bogart here was not so much a hopeless romantic as he was in Casablanca and he was kind-hearted as always, not at all gloomy but a cheery and humourous Capitaine. Lauren Bacall here was a ultimate femme fatale.
The story itself cannot compare with Casablanca, but seriously, very few things can. For me, what’s so great about this movie was Bacall. This is not my first time meeting Bacall. I’ve watched The Big Sleep a while back. It’s another Bacall + Bogart movie and it’s based on a novel by Hard-boiled forefather Raymond Chandler. To Have and Have Not was her very first film and at the age of 19, she portrayed her character very well. Composed yet playful. As opposed to Ingrid Bergman, who was so sweet and fragile that you have to hold her carefully in your hand and protect her with your life, Bacall was independent, witty, brave and full of life.
