20070614 @ the Fillmore, San Francisco, CA
Oh my goodness. It’s been 2 and a half month since I last went to a concert! (20070401 Blue Octber) I missed it so much!
So we fed ourselves on the way to SF with hot links and fried lemon chicken, the traffic was okay and by the time we got there it’s 10 to 8. We hurried in and surprisingly we found the hall wasn’t packed at all. We snuck into the second row appreciating the stage setting. While I was admiring the pretty colorful bottles of light scattered on the stage, I heard some girls behind me saying “I’m so pissed!” “She’s so tall.” Well, I hope they’re not talking about me, but if so, blame yourself for being short. Mahahahahaha~~ (just kidding.)
The opening band showed up pretty on time. They’re Division Day from Los Angeles. Vocal Rohner Segnitz greeted us first, then went on saying “I’d curse, but my mom’s in the crowd.” People cheered and someone yelled “Let it out!!!” They were actually quite good. I like the last two songs. They only sang til 8:40, which was a pretty short. There was a middle aged lady standing in front of us and she left when Division Day were done. When she turned around, she smiled and asked “You like it?” Thoughts running in my head “left before the headliner Fratellis, Rohner said his mom was in the crowd, she asked me whether I like it or not => she is Rohner’s mom!” so of course I told her “yeah, I like it!” I just wished that I’d put more smile on my face but everything happened in two seconds. Hope it’s encouraging enough. :)
8:40 to 9:00 they switched the set. Division Day band members went out to do the work themselves with Fratellis crew. And it turned out that they brought those pretty colorful lights themselves, which was neat. One of the Fratellis crew wore Fratellis T-shirt and one wore a T-shirt with Hooligan printed in the front. So I told chun about hooligans and a story of some mild-tempered gentleman wasn’t able to go on a business trip overseas during World Cup 2006 because he is a registered hooligan.
At 9 sharp, the light dimmed and Jon cam out along with Barry and Mince. The crowd roared. They opened with Baby Fratellis. The crowd went crazy but nobody pushed and we have plenty room to jump up and down and sway with the music. They didn’t talk much, but it’s okay for me. Under normal circumstance, I love the interaction between the band and the crowd, but this time I couldn’t hear most of what they were saying and for the part I did hear, I didn’t understand what they were talking about. (They are Scottish you see.) They sang all the songs in Costello music and two new songs – Pretty Like a Girl and The Pimp. We suspected they haven’t finished Pretty Like a Girl yet cos half of the song was “lalalalala”. They sang For The Girl acousticaly but sang Whistle for the Choir pretty loud which kinda let me down. Whistle for the Choir in the album was played with acoustic guitar and I was really looking forward to listening it live, acousticaly. It would be so awesome if Jon’d switch to acoustic guitar and the crowd quiet down a bit, the sound of his quitar flow in the air and he’d start “Well it’s a big big city and it’s always the same can never be too pretty tell me you your name…” with his sweet, honest, innocent and passionate voice. Something like… when Third Eye Blind pulled out a sofa on the stage and sang Deep Inside of You acoustically which was so darn heartbreakingly beautiful.
For the last song of encore they sang Chelsea Dagger, which was expected. When Mince started on drums, everyone went crazy again (not that we weren’t crazy already.) People jumped up and down and the floor was rocking with us. Jon didn’t even sing the der der der part at the begining cos the crowd was doing such a great job. It was so high listening Chelsea Dagger live!
At the end I wasn’t anxious leaving cos it’s still very early (only 10pm, but I guess they really don’t have other songs that they can sing anymore) and this time we were so close to the stage and I actually had the chance to get the set list. (Not interested in wet towel that kinda things though.) So I paid close attnesion on stage crew and when the guy with huge belly in a shirt saying “Hooligan” tore Barry’s set list on the stage, I reached out my hand 1 second faster than the other girl so I got it!!!!!
Satisfied, we walked to the door with the crowd and The Fillmore started to play Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline for like ten seconds. People groaned when they cut it, so they turned it back on cos I guess they didn’t wanna risk a riot. It was so nice. Everyone sang along (sweet Caroline, bon bon bon, good times never seemed so good. SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD) while walking out and some even danced. The atomsphere in The Fillmore was superb from begining to the very end!
When we finally got to the door, we were wondering why there wasn’t The Fillmore customized poster this time and later we realized that they were all given out. >< (Wiki: The Fillmore is also well known for its psychedelic concert posters by designers including Wes Wilson and Rick Griffin. Copies of these posters are given to fans free of charge as they exit selected, sold-out shows.)
