2009/10 TV: Quick Review

First of all, there are SOOOOO many medical shows! (GA, PP, Three Rivers, Mercy, Trauma, House…) I can’t take too much bloodiness in my life. I haven’t watched any of the returning shows mentioned above and the new ones didn’t impress me much, either.

OK, here is my brief review of the shows I intended to watch at the beginning of the season. Let’s start from the ones I DON’T like.

Hank
Boring.

Community
Unbelievably stupid. It’s very predictable in a bad way. Don’t get me wrong. Predictability is not necessarily a bad thing. Good writing and fine acting can make a cliche-ish romance comedy enjoyable, rewatchable even.

The Forgotten
I think I wrote about this already. It’s just bad. Bad writing overall. I felt sorry for the actors.

Accidentally on Purpose (sit com, SF movie critic) -*
Horrible, horrible show. It proves again that the only reason I could bear Dharma and Greg is because Greg was fantastic and dreamy. Jenna Elfman repraised her annoying wacky woman role in this new show and without Greg as a buffer, her hedeousness just goes through the roof. I don’t see why people would find her over the top unconvincing acting funny. Ergh.

The Vampire Diaries
I guess I’ve passed the age that enjoys CW. But the truth is, ever since Gilmore Girls came to an end, there hasn’t been any show worth watching (for me) on CW. The Priviledged lasted for a while, but that was only because I liked all the other characters and I hate the lead. How can I possibly continue watching a show with a main character I hate?

Oh, right. The Vampire Diaries. What can I say? I didn’t even sit through the opening credit.

Three Rivers (transplant surgeons)
I couldn’t even sit through one episode.

Trauma (SF, paramedic)
I couldn’t even sit through one episode.

Mercy (nurses) *
It was okay for the first few episodes but I couldn’t bear to see it becoming another slutty hospital everybody sleeps around show, so… don’t call us, we’ll call you.

Eastwick *
I like the girls. But seriously, how can I possibly watch a show where the supposedly dark and charming and sexy man looks like a pig. Thanks but no thanks. (Fire your casting dept. stat.)

OK, finally we came to a more pleasant territory.
Dancing with the Stars s9 **
Honestly, I haven’t been faithful to DWTS this season. The reason is simple. 16 couples? Are you freaking kidding me? I don’t have the time or the patience to sit through that many bad dancing! Maybe I’ll catch up, say, next week.

FlashForward ***
For some reason, I only watched the pilot (and I didn’t watch it until last week.) It just seemed too heavy and I wasn’t in a mood for heavy stuff. But the pilot showed really good potential. Apparently they know what they’re doing (unlike certain other shows: The Forgotten and etc.) The writing flowed and there seemed to be a good, well-structured story behind it.

The Big Bang Theory ***
The first few episodes were not as funny as it used to be, but it still maintain its quality. Something you can depend on for a good laugh.

Medium ***
Still find it entertaining. Coming back from the stroke. Allison now has new and fancy ways to help people.

Dollhouse ***
Still enjoy watching it but I think FOX has decided to pull it. Darn.

Glee ***
Being a big fan of musical theatre, it had to be really bad to have me uninterested in a show like this. The early released pilot did just that. But thanks to fmodem, a fervent advocate for Glee, I gave it a second chance and gosh am I glad! Under the skin of singing and dancing and dramatic comedy, there lies something really human. It delivers issues and provokes thoughts without being preachy. However, it does not reach 4 stars because the cynic of me still hates the happy family image it tries to portray and find it hypocritical.

Modern Family ***
I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson. I watched the show because of him. He’s so talented and cute. I don’s care if he’s gay. I love him all the same. OK, enough of JTF, let’s talk about Modern Family. If it hadn’s been because of JTF, I wouldn’t have watched the show and the pilot didn’s impress me much so I was kinda wrestling with myself whether I should keep watching or not. And I’m glad I did, because it turned out to be really funny and sweet. Plus, Julie Bowen is in it. It’s nice to see a familiar face.

Castle ****
Castle oh Castle. Maybe the cases are not as fancy as other crime dramas, but it sure is fun to watch. Very light and cute. Good for you after a day of stressful work.

The Good Wife ****
The attention to detail never ceased to amaze me. But like Castle, the cases are not its strength.

V, a remake of a 1983 series of the same name, will premiere next week. Looking forward to it.

Happy Day (so far)

shooting stars

what makes you happy? except for talking to you and you only
what can i do to lift you up, brighten your spirit, tell me
do i take you for a ride? in the middle of the night
they’d talk oh let them talk
why do we or do we give a damn?
lets go out in the middle of the night
shoot some stars as if they were
people you hate right now
shoot some stars because you know
it will be alright when the sun comes up
when you get out of a bad dream
with a foul taste lingering in the mouth
you’ll find them less irritating
you’ll care less
and you’ll grab the harmonica
and play some tune that no one recognize
and say shit that fucking bastard really get on my nerves
and repeat and do it again
i’ll take you out, out in the middle of the night
and we will have a blast
in an autumn night

Hold tight to your genre,
Or you might
Very well forget how to live or breathe.
Grab on to the doctrines, the big names that
Make. you. dizzy.
Don’t stop worshiping like
You do.

Tread not the wet grass after the rain,
Or you might
Be thrown off
Balance, like
I did.

When you strip the meaning of a word being a word,
It’s the fall of Babel all over.
All hell breaks lose and I’m
Mad. at. you.

Be in a circle happy little circle be in a circle be.
Happy now?
Oh yes you are.

Nick Hornby Lately

After reliving his role as a columnist at The Believer, Nick Horny managed to keep himself busy. His new movie, inspired by Lynn Barber’s memoir, An Education is about to release in the U.S. while his latest book, Juliet, Naked has clinched a seat in New York Times bestsellers list.

An Education is a coming-of-age story (not surprised) of a girl/woman (!) who met and then had a relationship with a much older man.

The theme of Juliet, Naked is one that we’re more familiar with Hornby. It’s about music, relationship and identity.

There are many ways you can enjoy a piece of literary or artistic work, and one of them is to hear the creator talking about it. So here they are…

This episode was very A Few Good Men-y. Matt Czuchry reprised his role as a privileged ivy league kid. Here he played an excessively ambitious junior associate Cary in a law firm who had settled numerous cases without ever going to court once. He’d always been able to work his charm out of a case, just like Tom Cruise did before he was assigned a case with strings (ie. Demi Moore) attached to it. The first time Cary had to address to the court in this episode, he looked timid and unsure, unlike his usual confident and eloquent self. But underneath his cocky and I-have-and-always-will-have-everything-my-way attitude lied a amiable quality in his character. He was willing to learn and he was willing to work hard. While recognizing Alicia as his opponent, he was still able to admire her qualities with an objective eye. Apparently he was not created as a flat, stereotypical villain merely to posed as a work place hazard for the protagonist. I’m glad that as we reached to the third episode, it seemed that there was a story behind Cary. And by the way he was eager to please, to be impressive at the firm, I bet Diane was his mother. We’ll see.

Jane carried a paperback of Tom Rob Smith’s first novel, Child 44. It was given to her by her boyfriend, K. In exchange, she gave him The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which she finished reading just a week before she got home. Jane’s book club came close to choose Gurnsey as their second book, but instead The Collector, which turned out to be too intimidating that no one actually read it, won by two votes. During the spring, several of the book club members read Gurnsey on their own and they all raved about it. She bought it, read it on the plane, fell in love with it, and gave it to K with a slice of boarding pass tucked in as a surprise souvenir. Unlike the cute and delightful Gurnsey novel, Child 44 was thrilling and intense. She still couldn’t help sidetracking while reading it. She kept stopping to wonder if he liked the parts she liked. She couldn’t wait to finish the book so that she could share her thoughts with him. But at the same time, she couldn’t bear to finish it knowing the sense that they were doing the same thing would be gone. Thinking that he was holding this book, enjoying the same excitement it brought just a few weeks ago comforted her. It made her feel less apart.

Jane also carried a small vial of Paul Smith’s Story, a cologne she and K picked up after numerous cologne tasting at the mall. She loved smelling the Chinese grapefruit on his neck riding on the back of his motorcycle. It reminded her of his embrace. She would simply tip the top off and immerse herself in the green aroma of the early autumn fruit and remembered sunset by Rainbow Bridge where they talked about football and kissed. She would close her eyes, see his smile and imagine his hand touching hers with a squeeze that makes both of their stomachs flutters with joy.

The Forgotton s1e1 Pilot

Boring writing.

You can see it “TRIED” very hard to be something but it only turned out to be a joke in every single way. The dialogues seemed forced and the actors seemed to be shouting “it’s not like I have a choice” when they acted out the unnatural sincerity of their respective characters.

I wondered why it wasn’t killed during the pitch.

You do get tired of it from time to time.

The Good Wife s1e1 Pilot

The Good Wife 裡有很多熟面孔: 包括 ER 的 Julianna Margulies, Sports Night 的 Josh Charles, Gilmore Girls 的 Matt Czuchry, Chicago 的 Christine Baranski.

At the end, Ed’s voice over concluded with sentiment,

…because when it’s all said and done, 90% of being a dad is just showing up.

It sort of touched me (because of the scene) and then pissed me off.

yeah, just leave the rest of the work to moms.

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total darkness sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.

G.I. Joe (2009)

B

It’s not B- because Rachel Nichols is cute and Sienna Miller is hot (dark hair becomes her) and the car chase scene made me laugh so hard. Stephen Sommers really has a lot to learn (from Michael Bay.) And the script can seriously use some editing. Cut those silly dialogue out, you don’t need fillers, don’t make a freaking action movie over 2 hours.

All in all, I enjoyed it. But it does get boring from time to time.
