Some Latin terms

Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc
Means “After this, therefore because of this”, which is a logical
fallancy. It's a temptimg error because the cause always happens
before its effect, some would have the tendancy to draw a conclusion
based on temporal sequence of events.
First learn this phrase in the West Wing season 1 ep 2 Post Hoc,
Ergo Propter Hoc

Pro Bono is another very popular term stands for “For the
(public) good”, often used in legal circonstances.

Ad hoc “For this” — i.e. improvised, made up on the spot.
largely used in my professional area, I keep forgetting the meaning -_-

Id est (i.e.)
“That is (to say)”, abbreviated as “i.e.” — sometimes “in this
case,” depending on the context. It is never equivalent to
“e.g.”. Very often seen in math context.

and e.g. is the abbr. of Exempli gratia which is different
from eg. = Ergo

Status quo (ante)
“The state that was (before)” — the status of affairs or situation
prior to some upsetting event.

Sub poena (subpoena)
“Under penalty” — of a request (usually by a court) that must be complied to on pain of punishment.
Often hear lately.

Circa (ca.)
“Around” — in the sense of “approximately, about”; usually of a date,
I kept mistaking Circa as since @@

She's So High – Kurt Nilson

She's blood, flesh, and bone. No tucks or silicone
She's touch, smell, sight, taste and sound.
But somehow I can't believe that anything should happen
I know where I belong and nothing's gonna happen

Cause, She's so high, high above me. She's so lovely
She's so high, like Cleopatra, Joan of Ark or Aphrodite
Too-too-too….
She's so high, high above me

First class and fancy free, she's high society
She's got the best of everything
What could a guy like me ever really offer?
She's perfect as she can be, why should I even bother, a-hah…

[Repeat chorus]
[solo *]

She comes to speak to me, I freeze immediately
Cause what she says sounds so unreal
Cause somehow I can't believe that anything should happen
I know where I belong and nothings gonna happen

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a fun thing to read. It's like a huge knowledge ocean;
however, one should have one's own discernment for the info provided
isn't garanteed to be the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the
truth, or been proofread.

As a person who loves to learn new things (info addicted), wikipedia
is an awesome place to explore. Take what I've just done for example,
in the article on the Economist – Proof and beauty
Adrian talked about, the Latin phrase Quod erat demonstrandum
(i.e. which was to be shown) is mentioned. So I went to Wikipedia for
Q.E.D (which I've already known becuz of the comic Q.E.D. but still
would like to learn more about), and the Q.E.D. page brought me to
Chinglish, and then lead me to Engrish (aka. Japanlish). Isn't it fun?

Now I'm reading political correctness page, which has always been
an fascinating topic for me, and on that page I read some interesting
example of the evolution of politically correct phrases, such as invalid
-> disabled -> handicapped -> disabled -> people with disabilities ->
physically challenged. (I was reading Peter Mayer's Encore Provence,
in which a person said that you can no longer call me short but vertically
challenged, ha :p)

Another thing worth noted on PC page –
Any reference to the area that consists of Mainland China,
Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan as “Greater China,” and Taiwan should be referred to as “places,” thus avoid taking a position the political status of Taiwan.

according to wikipedia, How Bizarre is one of the most bizarre
songs of the 90's. This song was recorded by the band OMC (Otara Millionaires Club).
This song has been a 1 hit wonder.

Brother Pele's in the back, sweet Zina's in the front
Cruisin' down the freeway in the hot, hot sun
Suddenly red-blue lights flash us from behind
Loud voice booming, “Please step out onto the line”
Pele preaches words of comfort, Zina just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, “Is that a Chevy '69?”

How bizarre
How bizarre, how bizarre

Destination unknown, as we pull in for some gas
Freshly pasted poster reveals a smile from the past
Elephants and acrobats, lions snakes monkey
Pele speaks “righteous,” Sister Zina says “funky”

How bizarre
How bizarre, how bizarre

Ooh, baby (Ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
Everytime I look around
Everytime I look around (Everytime I look around)
Everytime I look around
It's in my face

Ring master steps out and says “the elephants left town”
People jump and jive, but the clowns have stuck around
TV news and camera, there's choppers in the sky
Marines, police, reporters ask where, for and why
Pele yells, “We're outta here,” Zina says, “Right on”
We're making moves and starting grooves before they knew we were gone
Jumped into the Chevy and headed for big lights
Wanna know the rest? Hey, buy the rights…

How bizarre
How bizarre, how bizarre

Ooh, baby (Ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
Everytime I look around
Everytime I look around (Everytime I look around)
Everytime I look around
It's in my face

White vs. Red

剛剛忍不住, 又去倒了一杯 Maximin Riesling.

Maximin Gruenhaeuser Riesling 2002 from Germany. Qualitaetswein.

Dr. Loosen Riesling

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams; —
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample a kingdom down.
We, in the ages lying,
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself in our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.
A breath of our inspiration
Is the life of each generation;
A wondrous thing of our dreaming
Unearthly, impossible seeming —
The soldier, the king, and the peasant
Are working together in one,
Till our dream shall become their present,
And their work in the world be done.
They had no vision amazing
Of the goodly house they are raising;
They had no divine foreshowing
Of the land to which they are going:
But on one man's soul it hath broken,
A light that doth not depart;
And his look, or a word he hath spoken,
Wrought flame in another man's heart.
And therefore to-day is thrilling
With a past day's late fulfilling;
And the multitudes are enlisted
In the faith that their fathers resisted,
And, scorning the dream of to-morrow,
Are bringing to pass, as they may,
In the world, for its joy or its sorrow,
The dream that was scorned yesterday.
But we, with our dreaming and singing,
Ceaseless and sorrowless we!
The glory about us clinging
Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing:
O men! it must ever be
That we dwell, in our dreaming and singing,
A little apart from ye.
For we are afar with the dawning
And the suns that are not yet high,
And out of the infinite morning
Intrepid you hear us cry —
How, spite of your human scorning,
Once more God's future draws nigh,
And already goes forth the warning
That ye of the past must die.
Great hail! we cry to the comers
From the dazzling unknown shore;
Bring us hither your sun and your summers;
And renew our world as of yore;
You shall teach us your song's new numbers,
And things that we dreamed not before:
Yea, in spite of a dreamer who slumbers,
And a singer who sings no more.

A brief biographical note:

The Irish-English singer, Arthur William Edgar O'Shaughnessy, was born in
London in 1844. He was connected, for a while, with the British Museum,
and was transferred later to the Department of Natural History. His first
literary success, Epic of Women (1870), promised a brilliant future for
the young poet, a promise strengthened by his Music and Moonlight (1874).
Always delicate in health, his hopes were dashed by periods of illness and
an early death in London in 1881.

[Ode] is not only O'Shaughnessy's best, but is, because of its perfect
blending of music and message, one of the immortal classics of our verse.

We are the music makers

We are the music makers,
we are the dreamers of dreams

When I was in senior high, the Internet is a fascinating place to explore.
Back then the digital information retrieval technology was not very
common, and we deployed only primitive searching tools. It's all
fun for me. The place I lingered most of the time is a Chinese built
English based chatroom NetWalkers, which
is no longer there. The founders of the site were several college
(or grads) international students, and after they graduate, they
decided to shut down the site cuz they're no longer being able to
maintain it. So, goodbye Netwalkers and the friends I met there.
(The only person I still have contact with is Machy, but in fact,
we rarely talk.) That was the background and the funny thing is…
during that period of time was the peak of my English typing. I
dont think I type as fast even when I was in grad school.

Other than chatrooms, I also love to surf the web, and discover
something intriguing. I remember there were two poems that I
always recite and memorize, but as time goes by, my memery doesn't
serv so well, and the pages carried those words are long drown in
the internet galaxy.

We are the music makers; we are the dreamers of dreams.
And all I can remember is just this sentence… the rest only a
vague feeling.

Another poem I like quite much:
….. Oh my gosh, I don't even remember the first part /_\

A brief note

The reason why I'm not posting anything is becuz I'm
kinda down right now, and why is that? Please go to my photo album
and see what happen to my honey darling camry, you'll know.
I literally run “into” a car parking along the street with very
slow speed, I have no idea why it can be so serious… :(

so I dont have the mood to talk right now.

but still, there's something worth noting:
Michellyne won the Starlet!!!! This is incredible!
And I was so glad that Katie was the first one to be illiminated :p
check out the look on her face… ha

It’s awesome

The day before yesterday I had a quite devotion time,
and though I failed to continue to do so for the following
couple of days, I woke up earlier for the past few days and
it's less painful getting up. I guess I just had a peek of how
wonderful my life would be if I constantly walk with God. ;)

Aside from wine, I got a pack of St. Dalfour France (Organic) Classic
Breakfast Tea the other day, which looks more luxurious but actually
cost less than Twinings Tea. It smells mind, the color is
beautiful red, and the taste is unobtrusive.

I'd also like to try its preserves.

St. Dalfour

Just a thought

No time to elaborate.

Sometimes we'd admire the delicate expression of complexity, such as
Closer. Though I dont really know the story, from what I've heard,
I believe it's the sophisticated depiction of human emotion and
affection that earned it so many praises. However, when you really
think of it, not everything on earth has to be complicated. On the
contrary, some things are meant to be simple, as truth is always
simple. But we have the tendancy to complicate matters, as if it
wouldn't be true otherwise.

when I was in my car today, I was pondering about why I can accept
the violence on TV (finctional, of course), but I have little
acceptance for infedelity (even if it's also fictional.)

Daily

Didn't bring lunch today, was wondering what to eat. At the same
time remembered that lack of bed time reading material. (Not
actually run out of things to read, but recently prefer something
light like Jin Yung.) So made up my mind, went to Fremont Library to
get some fictions and went to Mission burger to have their awesome
burger and fries.

It's Pauline's wedding tomorrow, almost forgot. But still I can go
to Santa Clara in the afternoon. So dying to have another chocolate
souffle, and see if there's anything new and fun @ Urban Outfitters.
Will go to Valley Fair of course, also spend some time in Crate &
Barrel. Such an enjoyable afternoon. Hope the weather will be fine
as well.

Btw, Rita sent an email saying that we're gonna have a company meeting
today at 3. We're wondering if it's a April Fool's joke, but if so,
she shouldn't have sent it yesterday, it's against the rule. I myself
dont think they'd make such poor joke in the office, but then again
who knows. We've made up our minds that just act calmly and observe
whether it's serious or not…. haha

but if it's really a joke, it shall be fun. We do need some joyful
noise lately.

Two Rieslings

Yesterday Yan asked me to take her to Cosco cuz there's
something wrong with her car battary. I found two Riesling
which aren't very cheap but temping still. One is Cheteau
Ste. Michelle & Dr. Lossen 2004 Eroica Riesling, which got a
very high rating for its 2003 Eroica Riesling. costs 17 something.
I bought a Cheteau Ste. Michelle 2004 Johannesberg Riesling a
while ago becuz of its Eroica. Now I finally got a Eroica!
However, 2004 is pretty new, so I'm thinking about holding it for
a while to allow it mature.

Therefore, I guess I'll open my other Riesling first.
Maximin Gruenhaeuser Riesling 2002 from Germany. Qualitaetswein.
However, I can't help but wondering if it's a fake or not, cuz I
can't find info on this bottle anywhere on the web, and the teg
is not very clear either. It doesn't specify whether it's a Qmp or
QbA(?). Sigh, hope it's good. I so long for Germany whites.

And it's definitely a hint from above that I didn't buy Hougue Late
Harvest Riesling 2002 the day before. I was in Safeway and came
accorss Hougue and another Riesling. I found that Late Harvest is
running out. Behind the Late Harvest tag there are actually 04
Johannesberg Riesling, (the color is very different!), and there
are only 2 bottle of LH left. I was gonna bought them but then
something stopped me.

If I had bought the two Rieslings that day, I wouldn't be able to
buy the two I have now…which would make me very very sad, cuz
it's so hard to find German wines here.

Last two days

Got quite a few things worth writing down but don't know why I
just didn't have the mood to. So I figure at least I take a brief
note of what I have in mind.

The Starlet this week is about comedy, appaerantly Mercedece
can't do it at all. The others were right, she was too
self-conscious. But in the end, Cecile got the “Dont call us,
we'll call you.” which is inevitable. Very looking forward to the
fanale next week.

Eyes premiere this Wed which is quite interesting. I think
I'm gonna give Alias up and turn to the arms of eyes. After Voughn
lost his charm and spy Mom left (It's said that she's coming back
in the season fanale. I just hate them killing people and bring them
back to life over and over. Aren't they tired? I'm definitely tired
of it.) Jack is onto something and is not so much a loving dad
anymore. Frankly speaking, Alias has nothing left worth seeing. I
was telling myself that at least the action and the refreshing looks
still get their entertaining value, but in fact, without a good
story line, it's a waste of time watching it.

Tru Calling 2-hour season premiere. It took me a little time to
figure what's about Tru and what's with she and Jack, and her
father. After the first hour, I almost wanna give her up cuz 1st,
Eliza looks fatter than she used to be, and 2nd, I don't agree
with the idea that she thinks it so right to change people's fate.
I'm actually more on Jack's side. (But I still need to figure out
their past, where their abilities came from, and what's their
“destiny” or “job”.) However, the second hour offered me a brand
new idea of what the show is about. It showed me that it's not that
one-dimensioned and plain. It's got different possibilties and
different ways of doing things. So, damn, now there are 5 days in
a week that I have things to watch…

Since I for now all I wrote is about TV, I guess I'd better write
the wine thing in another new article.

Luke 2:19

But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.

I can get a new VAIO keyboard which is beautiful but not
very good use… sigh, i don't like soft keyboard. Can I get
a mechenical keyboard in the states? I love mine old (which
is drown by my dear former roommate) Acer keyboard. It's simple,
elegant, and very clear…

hmm… let's go check it out ^^
